Terms and Conditions of Participation
The following conditions must be observed when applying for the 40th edition of “Choreography – International Competition for Choreography”, which will take place from June 24 to 26, 2027, at the Theater am Aegi in Hanover:
1. Choreographers must have completed professional training.
2. Choreographers must not be older than 39 years.
3. The competition is open to all stylistic directions. The evaluation criteria are solely the imaginative use of space and time, the choreographic realization of an idea, and its transmission to the performers.
4. The duration of the performance must be between 5 and 12 minutes.
5. A solo piece may not be performed by the choreographer themselves.
6. Participants must be available for performances on all three days of the competition. They also agree to take part, without additional remuneration, in required rehearsals, possible press conferences, interviews, and radio or television recordings.
7. Applications must be submitted using the official online application form, fully completed and sent to Ballett Gesellschaft Hannover e.V. by March 15, 2027.
8. The choice of theme and music is free. Details must be provided in the application form. The choreographic work must be submitted via an internet link (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). The video must contain only the choreography being submitted.
A pre-selection jury will decide on admission to the competition based on the submitted videos. The organizer reserves the right to make the final selection.
The jury’s decision is final. If a participant is a student or company member of a jury member, that juror will abstain from voting. Jury members are available for advisory discussions with participants after the competition upon request.
Awards totaling €50,000, as well as guest performance and production awards, will be granted.
Choreographers and dancers from countries with appointment-based visa systems are advised to schedule a visa appointment for early 2026, as processing times can take several months. If the appointment is not needed, it can be cancelled later.
The Ballett Gesellschaft Hannover will store the personal data of choreographers and dancers in its database for future contact. This data may be shared with third parties for the purpose of offering performance opportunities. Consent is given voluntarily and may be withdrawn at any time in writing without stating reasons.
The Ballett Gesellschaft Hannover retains the rights to all images and videos submitted with the application and those produced during the competition. These may be used for promotional purposes in all print and digital media (including flyers, programmes, brochures, advertisements, website, Facebook, Instagram), as well as for press purposes.
All choreographies presented during the competition will be recorded. Participants agree that these recordings may be used by the Ballett Gesellschaft Hannover across all media.
By applying, participants confirm that they agree to the competition conditions and are responsible for the presentation of the submitted work at the 2026 competition in Hanover.

Stage: Stage size: 10 m x 10 m, Black dance floor, Black curtains with wings, Black backdrop or white opera foil
Lighting: General wash, backlight, and opera foil in white, yellow, red, or blue, Side wings in white, 2 diagonals in white, 9 spots: 3 rear, 3 middle, 3 front (overhead), 1 follow spot (1.2 kW HMI)
Sound: only CD, USB, or MiniDisc accepted (no DAT)
Further technical details will be communicated to participants approximately four weeks before the competition.
Venue and Dates
The competition will take place from June 11 to 13, 2026, at Theater am Aegi, Aegidientorplatz 2, 30159 Hanover, Germany.
The competition will be held publicly on Thursday and Friday in front of a professional jury, with the final taking place on Saturday evening. Rehearsals will take place on Thursday and Friday mornings. Each participant will have a maximum of **25 minutes** for stage setup, lighting, and rehearsal.

Accommodation costs in a hotel will be covered by Ballett Gesellschaft Hannover e.V.
